Electrical Engineer - Grid Connection
Own the electrical and grid scope of battery storage projects, securing smart, cost-efficient connections and shaping delivery from development through operation.
Role Description
As our Electrical Engineer – Grid Connection you own the electrical and grid scope of our battery energy storage projects across the full project lifecycle — from acquisition and development, through design and construction, to operation and sale.
You play a key role in securing timely and cost-efficient grid connections for our projects, and in ensuring smooth collaboration with system operators, suppliers and contractors. You are the internal reference point for electrical engineering questions: you produce the early design and the calculations that underpin our technical and commercial assumptions, and you review and challenge what external design offices, suppliers and contractors deliver.
The role is hands-on and spans several projects at different stages. You work within a small multidisciplinary team, in close cooperation with project management, development, grid, procurement and construction.
Key Responsibilities
Scope of responsibility
Acquisition and development – grid capacity and connection scope verification, technical due diligence, preliminary design, electrical calculations and technical assumptions for CAPEX, OPEX and efficiency.
Permitting and grid connection – connection applications, connection conditions and connection agreements with DSOs and PSE, including substation and grid-side scope.
Design, construction and operation – design reviews, coordination of external design offices, and technical support to construction, asset management and operations
Grid Connection and System Operators
Prepare and review grid connection applications with the relevant System Operators (DSOs and PSE), and track connection conditions through to signed connection agreements.
Manage relationships with System Operators during permitting and oversee the process of obtaining and amending final connection agreements, including substation and grid-side scope.
Verify reactive power regulation requirements arising from grid codes and connection conditions — Q control, voltage regulation, capability curves, and compliance with IRiESD, IRiESP and NC RfG.
Support qualification of our assets for the provision of balancing services to PSE — grid code compliance, verification testing, metering and telemetry requirements.
Electrical Design and Calculations
Carry out preliminary internal electrical design — single-line diagrams, MV/HV layout, protection and metering concept, sizing of main equipment — together with CAPEX and OPEX calculations and technical assumptions during development.
Independently perform fundamental electrical engineering calculations: cable sizing, voltage drop, short-circuit currents, transformer and protection sizing, power balance and power factor.
Calculate electrical losses (cables, transformers, converters, BESS) and incorporate them into efficiency, CAPEX and OPEX assessments.
Manage and coordinate external design offices and consultants.
Acquisitions and technical due diligence
Provide technical due diligence on acquisition targets: verify available grid capacity, connection scope and cost allocation, and identify technical risks in project documentation.
Review and challenge third-party technical documentation and design, and translate findings into risks, conditions and cost items for the transaction team.
Supplier, contractors and project execution
Lead technical design reviews and support negotiations with battery, PCS and Balance of Plant (BOP) / EPC contractors on technical scope, performance guarantees and testing.
Provide technical support to the Construction Manager during realization, and to the Asset Management and Operations teams when required.
Contribute to risk assessments and technical decision-making throughout project phases.
Qualifications
Required
MSc in electrical power engineering or a related technical field.
At least 5 years of professional experience in electrical design and/or grid connection of energy storage, renewable or industrial infrastructure projects in Poland.
Practical knowledge of Polish grid connection procedures and grid codes (IRiESD, IRiESP, NC RfG) and of the connection application process with DSOs and PSE.
Working knowledge of MV/HV substations, protection systems, metering and main primary equipment.
Ability to read, review and challenge third-party technical documentation and design.
Ability to perform fundamental electrical calculations independently, without relying on external design offices.
Experience working with external design offices, suppliers and EPC/BOP contractors.
Polish and English at professional working level.
Category B driving licence and willingness to travel to sites in Poland.
Advantageous
SEP qualifications (E and/or D) up to 110 kV.
Hands-on experience with BESS projects, or with qualification for the PSE balancing market.
Familiarity with design and network analysis tools — AutoCAD, PowerFactory / ETAP, PVsyst or equivalent
Experience supporting M&A technical due diligence.
Construction License in the electrical specialty.
Personal qualities
Technical depth with a problem-solving mindset. Goes into the detail, and comes back with a workable solution rather than a list of obstacles.
Confident with external stakeholders. Comfortable managing system operators, design offices and contractors, and holding them to what was agreed.
Independent and collaborative. Delivers own scope without supervision, and works well inside a small multidisciplinary team.
Structured and reliable. Documents assumptions and calculations so that others can build on them.
Comfortable in a growing company. Pragmatic about ambiguity and willing to build what is missing rather than inherit it.
Practical details
Based in Poland, occasional travel to Tavion's other locations or project sites.
You will support a portfolio of BESS projects at different stages of development, construction and operation.
